People like to get a bargain, so looking out for the cheapest caravan insurance may be high on their priority list and theres nothing wrong with that.

Trying to save a bit of money is perfectly understandable – particularly when things are tight, so those headlines offering the cheapest caravan insurance may seem very attractive.

When looking at these cheap deals though, you may wish to bear in mind that the cover they provide may not give you the protection you would like to have.

You may also need to factor in variables such as:

  • the age and value of your caravan and its contents, fixtures and fittings;
  • new for old versus market value replacement;
  • whether you use your caravan exclusively in the UK or take holidays abroad in it too;
  • your annual mileage, as limits may apply to some policies;
  • age limits for drivers;
  • the level of excess you may be expected to pay in the event of a claim;
  • UK and continental breakdown and recovery arrangements

Your static caravan insurance

Static caravan insurance provides insurance protection for both the fabric and contents of a static caravan.

A static caravan is typically defined as being one that is a semi-permanently located on an approved caravan site. It is used for a few weeks per year for the purposes of recreation and holidays, although some insurance may consider this to include renting it to others for their holidays.

If you live in a park home, this will, by contrast, be defined as being your permanent place of residence and is typically located on a local authority approved park home residential site.

You cannot use static caravan insurance for park homes or vice versa.

Static caravan cover may come with some basic conditions as follows:

  • some policies may demand that the caravan is located on a site that does not have a documented history of flooding;
  • when the caravan is closed up for the winter, you may be obliged to drain down all water and heating systems accordingly;
