Alabama Will Not Implement Government’s New High-Risk Health Insurance Pool

Gov. Bob Riley, Friday, April 30, 2010, said the state of Alabama will not implement the federal Governments new (high-risk) health insurance pool for those who are unable to get private coverage. The deadline for participation of this new federal care plan was Friday.

Alabama isn’t the only non-participant state; several other states have opted out of this plan including Hawaii, Louisiana, Nebraska, Mississippi, South Carolina, Nevada, Georgia, Virginia, Wyoming and Minnesota. Riley mentioned how the premiums collected would not be enough to cover the costs incurred.

“We would prefer to have Alabama people dealing with Alabama people. However, after an exhaustive review, we’ve determined it would be impracticable if not impossible for the state to assume this liability,”

According to Jim Ridling, Alabama’s Insurance Commissioner, one influencing factor took into consideration was the lack of regulations from the federal government.
