Travel Insurance: Do I Need It?

If you’re planning your trip with a travel agent, you’ve no doubt been offered travel insurance, and you’ve no doubt asked yourself, “Do I really need it?”

The answer to that question depends on several things. First of all, consider where you’re going, what the cost is, and how much you stand to lose, in terms of down payments and reservations already paid for. The first function of travel insurance is to make sure that you are able to recoup the money you have spent for a trip in the event that life catches you by surprise and ruins your travel plans.

The next question you should be asking yourself is whether or not your major medical insurance is going to cover you when you go wherever it is you are planning to go. In many cases, it won’t if you’re traveling overseas. And there’s nothing worse that getting sick and finding out too late that your medical insurance is not going to cover any of the bill because you happen to be in Switzerland (or wherever it is that you travel).

Usually, travel insurance is very low cost. When you put it next to the amount you’re going to spend on your vacation, it’s peanuts, really. In most cases, it’s worth it to shell out a few bucks to make sure that you will be able to get back what you’ve put down on your vacation if something should happen. It’s definitely worth it to have travel medical insurance in case you get sick while you’re overseas.

Ultimately, no one can decide whether it’s a good buy or not but you. But we suspect that if you choose not to purchase travel insurance, the first time you need it will be the last time you do without it. Getting sick overseas can quickly add up to a substantial bill, and losing out on hundreds of dollars because you got sick before you left, or had a family emergency is not fun either.

So look the numbers over and make a good decision for yourself. We suspect that, if you take the time to think about it, you’ll probably decide to take out ample insurance before booking your trip.
